In mathematics, the Fibonacci numbers or, Fibonacci sequence, are the numbers in the following integer sequence:

1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89, 144, .........................

or (often, in modern usage):

0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89, 144, .........................

By definition, the first two numbers in the Fibonacci sequence are either 1 and 1, or 0 and 1, depending on the chosen starting point of the sequence, and each subsequent number is the sum of the previous two.

If a Fibonacci number is divided by its immediate predecessor in the sequence, the quotient approximates φ (Phi); e.g., 987/610 ≈ 1.6180327868852.  This is also often referred to as the Golden Ratio. 

The Fibonacci spiral: an approximation of the golden spiral created by drawing circular arcs connecting the opposite corners of squares in the Fibonacci tiling; this one uses squares of sizes 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, and 34.

This spiral is seen everywhere in nature:  From the arrangement of sunflower seeds and flower petals, to the coils in a snail and Nautilus shell.

Fibonacci’s numbers, the Golden Ratio and the Fibonacci spiral are often used in architectural design, engineering and art.

Another interesting feature of the tower in front of you is the fact that it is literally ‘bursting out of its seams.” The precast concrete structures used to build most of the old buildings on campus are deteriorating very quickly.  This is because the concrete is quite porous and the moist salty air near the coast is causing the steel reinforcement to rust and expand, cracking the concrete.  You can see this very clearly in the tower in front of you.  A huge amount of money is currently being spent on restoring this steelwork inside the concrete walls.  (This building used to be the old boiler room, but has sadly gone to ruin.)
