Across the Road is 'The Cutter' which was originally the site of 'The Family Cutter Hotel'
The Family Cutter Hotel was built in 1769 and rebuild 37 years later. The landlord was James Bell from 1807 to 1823. During the Napoleonic Wars he was a valet to Lord Nelson.
In 1860 the poet and Pre-Raphaelite painter, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, stayed at the Cutter before getting married at St Clements Church.
The building was rebuilt in 1927, when it became known simply as 'The Cutter' and refurbished in 1957.
Adjacent to the cutter was a centuries old navigation system for boats coming ashore, Known as Hastings Upper and Lower Lights. When the boats at sea had the two lights in line they could turn inland into a safe channel between two ridges of rocks.
