The industry was spread along the sides of the river, making the most of the fall in height between Windermere and the sea at Greenodd. An effective power source was invaluable. Most of the area has been developed into a hotel and holiday village, and a motor museum. On the west bank before reaching Backbarrow, however, is still an area of ruins.
Here by the hotel is a large, well preserved piece of industrial machinery demonstrating the size and scale of the works once here. A leat runs along between the river and the small road to the museum. It powered water wheels to drive the machinery. The river under the bridge is worth a look too.
