Grist mills were an integral part of the very survival of many residents of small communities during the American Civil War. They not only supplied a town with commerce, during the war they became a lifeline. It has been suggested that the milling of grain is the oldest industry in the history of mankind. With the development of agriculture, came the need for milling, and the need to make grain reduction easier. The mill became the community center, serving not only as place to grind and purchase prepared grains, but also as a post office, store, meeting hall and gossip spot.
The American Civil War spilled in this area in the spring of 1862 changing the landscape forever. In March of that year, Major General George McClellan moved his Army of the Potomac to the peninsula between the York and James rivers. His intent was to capture Richmond, thereby ending the war.
Nearby Fredericksburg was the most direct route between the warring capitals. Neighboring mills, farms, railroads became necessary to sustain concentrated armies in the field.
