Not many people know that I was a pitcher for my high school baseball team. I didn’t have much speed, but I could throw a breaking ball! I was in the process of looking at a few choice colleges and universities to continue as a student-athlete when—WHAM!—out of nowhere I blew out my rotator cuff. That ended my chances of baseball, and I had to settle on being an engineer.
Many fellow cachers know of our present Geo-K9, golden retriever Sneakers, but not too many know of our first golden, Connor. My wife and I welcomed him into our family as an eight-week-old pup, and he lived until just after he turned 10-years-old. We’ll always remember that dog.
My first foray into five-star terrain caches occurred with my Geo-buddy, antimony13. We decided to take a canoe into the Loxahatchee River at Jonathan Dickinson State Park. Well, my last time in a canoe was 35 years prior, so I was nowhere close to skilled. In fact, I almost caused us to capsize! I have since redeemed myself in both canoe and kayak, but I’ll never forget that day that taught me to respect the river!
I went on a road trip a few years ago, hoping to attend a mega-event near Houston. Interstate 20 west-bound was shut down right after I left Louisiana, and I was forced to take back roads. Somewhere after leaving I-20 and heading south, I missed a turn to the right and found myself in Saxet, Texas. Not much more than a whistle-stop with a church and a café. I couldn’t even fill up my gas tank! But, YIKES! That café made the best coffee I ever tasted.
She doesn’t know about one of my former girlfriends, and that’s a good thing: because I really don’t want to explain Hannah to my wife. And please, don’t any of YOU tell my wife about her either!
During my grammar school years, I spent most of my time in Europe, the son of a regular Army father. We moved every few years as my father was transferred from one US Army base to another. While we were in Darmstadt (My father was stationed at the Dagger Complex.), I met an elderly gentleman with the most impressive horse I had ever seen. The horse’s name was Reittier, which is German for “an animal that can be ridden by a human.” The stead stood almost 18 hands high! (The world record is just over 19 hands.)
