The Nicomen Slough Water Fowl series is inspired by my dad who has been privileged to live and work alongside the Nicomen Slough and enjoys the rich variety of birds every day. These eight geocaches represent a few of the varieties of waterfowl that make the slough their home (at least for a part of each year). See if you can spot the eight different birds as you hunt for the caches --there is a photo to help you identify them on the underside of the cache lid. Have fun and happy hunting ("geocache" hunting that is) :)
NSWF #5 Great Blue Heron
The Great Blue Heron's call is a harsh croak, and it's heard most often during mating season. Sometimes they will make loud snapping sounds with their bills to attract a female or defend a nest. They're quite adaptable and can be found in both fresh and saltwater marshes. They usually nest in trees or bushes near a water's edge.
Note: a special thanks to the Leq' a: mel First Nation for allowing us to place 7 of these caches on their and the Skweahm land.
