Geocache Description:

The Cache is a small green container. Please note the cache is in a National Park and an entrance fee is payable on entry. This cache is in the vicinity of a numbered picnic sight where you are allowed to get out your vehicle (I won’t give you the number or it is too easy).

The Zambezi National Park runs along the majestic Zambezi River, which has the world famous Victoria Falls (the largest sheet of falling water in the world). The Falls are currently listed as one of the Seven Natural Wanders of the World and is a UNESCO Heritage Site.

This cache is part of a Series introducing some of the Flora and Fauna in the area. The cache is in the Zambezi National Parks that is both very picturesque with its main road following the banks of the Zambezi river and abundant in some of Africa’s Mammals, Birds, Reptiles, Plants, Fish and Tree.

This cache is Mammals –

Mammals are warm blooded animal’s separated from other animal classes in that they have hair, three ear middle ear bone, a neocortex and mammary glands (milk production for young). Scientific Name is Mammalia. Examples of mammals are; giraffe, buffalo, antelopes, cats (lions, leopards), porcupines, hippos (found in the Zambezi), rodents, bats, etc.

This Cache’s feature Mammal is the Elephant which can be found in abundance throughout Southern Africa, Zimbabwe and The Zambezi National Park.

Elephant Facts:

Scientific Name: Loxodonta Africana

Life Span:  Ave – 45 years (have been known to live 75+ years)

Weight: 4.5 – 5.5 Metric Tonnes

Height: Aprox 3m

Gestation Period: Aprox 22 – 23 Months

Food: Herbivore - Plats, Trees, Grasses (Often up root entire trees to get to higher branches)

I have chosen the Elephant for its abundance in this area, often seen on the river edge getting a fresh drink of water especially in the dry season, they even swim across to islands to eat vegetation that is green all year round from the available water in the river. The elephant is one of the most likely sighting of the “big game” in the area.

The “big brother” of the Indian Elephant, the African Elephants is larger than its counterpart. Another defining feature is the African elephant has visible ivory tusks. Unfortunately this has made it a target in Africa to poachers after the ivory which they sell on the black market mostly to Asia.

The Elephant like most other animals in the area can become agitated if you get too close so if you encounter them please keep a safe distance. I really hope you encounter this “Gentle Giant” while you are on your cache quest to admire the beauty of this creature.

WARNING: This area is wild and dangerous, please do not leave the picnic area on foot unless with a qualified guide. When driving in the area do not get out of your vehicle (you are only allowed out of your vehicle at designated picnic sites). Be vigilant as the animals can get into the picnic sites if you see any get in your car.
