Nociception

Nociception is the ability to feel pain.  Nociceptors are what most of us would call pain receptors and they protect the body from potential harm such as burns or crushing injuries.  Typically we will react by moving away from the perceived injury but for some people pain can either be intensified or dismissed.  Chronic pain or depression can result for those with an over sensitivity.  Ignored injuries that become worse from inattention may be the result of nociceptors not relaying information appropriately.
