This cache is the first (or the last) on the Canon Sheehan loop walk.
Patrick Augustine Sheehan was born on St Patrick’s day 1852, in Mallow. Because of the large numbers of priests in Ireland he first worked as a curate in Plymouth, England. He quickly established a reputation as a preacher and was much sought after for sermons, retreats, and incidental addresses. He returned to Ireland in 1877 and worked in Mallow, Cobh and back in Mallow before being appointed parish priest of Doneraile in1895. It was then the largest parish in the diocese of Cloyne. It was also an area of religious tolerance, thanks to the St. Leger family.
He wrote widely for religious and literary magazines and was widely read in Europe and the United States.
“My New Curate” and “Glenanaar” were 2 of his more famous books and were widely read from publication (in many languages) till the middle of the last century. Interest died down until it was revived around the centenary of his death in 2013. He was also seen as an activist who championed the community he ministered.
