Big tree Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Hidey-Rob: I went to Mayfield Park this afternoon, and found that this geocache has been taken again. All I could find was the drive block that weighed it down, which was about 40ft away from the hide. I looked about 100 yards in all directions, but it appears that the cache has been taken away. I also had a good look for a new hide, but there are no viable ones for my bigger boxes, that won't also get used by kids in the long term, so I have decided to archive BIG TREE, and free up the space for someone else to hide a smaller cache.

Geocache Description:

The cache is hidden in Mayfield Park, with the kind permission of Southampton City Council Land Management Ecologist. It is a 1.2L clip-lock container, in a secured large camo bag, covered with additional local natural camo. There is swag, as well as a logbook and pencil. An easy family friendly cache, with lots of other caches close by. Wellies will be required in very wet weather. An ideal transitory cache for Travel Bugs

Venue:-
The venue is child and dog friendly. The paths are a mixture of tarmac, hard gravel, and cut grass. There are two levels, joined by a deep gully, which can be easily crossed by gentle slopes, steep slopes, and steps, so take your pick. There are scattered seats within the venue, with interesting views. Also you can hear the crowds at Southampton football ground if there is a game on, or the boats on Southampton Water. There could be muggles with dogs.

The southern level is an open area of cut grass, with a fenced off childrens playground, a number of football pitches with goal posts, a tarmac basketball area with a small covered pavillion, and a fenced off memorial to Whig politician Charles James Fox, in the form of a large obelisk which was erected in 1810. Some great sun sets here.

The northern level is divided into lots of small sections. A plant nursery with cafe. A lawn bowls club, outside of which are toilets, and the disabled toilet has a RADAR lock, if you have a key. Lots of flower beds. Some small open areas of cut grass, and a small maze like area. There are some great views from up here. There is also additional car parking here, but I tend to leave it for the bowling club and the plant nursery.

To the western side there is a wooded area on a steep slope, with a path running along the bottom, and there is a top path which drops down to the lower level at both ends. There is a seat at the top of the wooded slope with a good view, but no seat at the bottom. These paths can be used at the north end to get to Millers Pond on foot, but be careful of the busy road, bear left and go under the railway bridge, and more caches are to your right.

Hide:-
The hide is at the bottom of the deep gulley which separates the two main levels. Use the slopes, steps, or the path. Beware of muggles, all around and above, they can be like buses here, non-existent, or come in batches. Some bramble here to avoid.
