River Oaks United Methodist Church was founded in 1937 and began as the Castleberry Methodist Church. Throughout its history, the River Oaks United Methodist Church has been noted as a mission minded church. Reaching out to both local and foreign mission projects. In December of 1981 a fire completely destroyed the sanctuary. The congregation joined together to rebuild and within 18 months the rebuilt sanctuary was dedicated. Up until recently the church sponsored a Parents Day Out. Begining in 1979 this program provided local parents the opportunity to have their preschool children safely looked after while they were able to attend to work, or other needed activities. Due to transition in the neighborhood and other factors the program was recently discontinued. Even today the church continues to reach out beyond itself as it provides to those in need through its Food Pantry, and makes worship space available in its former sanctuary to a newly created hispanic church congregation for worship each Sunday.
I was privileged to pastor this church from June of 1996 until June of 1999.
