Call me old fashioned if you like but I am not a fan of the modern day approach to ornamental gardening with the predominance of natives and grasses and the emphasis on low maintenance.
Where's the colour, the spontaneity, the fragrance drifting on the evening breeze which never fails to evoke memories of days gone by. The days of visitors and visiting, never without a bunch of flowers for the lady of the house and very often some baking and/or a jar of preserves as well.
Who can resist a wee bunch of Violets or Lily of the valley, the intoxicating scent of Carnations and Roses or the majesty of Gladiolus, Delphiniums, or Chrysanthemums? The confirmation spring has arrived with the first of the Daffodils blooming and the Sweet Peas steadily making their way to the top of their support to begin a delightful show. Asters blooming amongst the ever present Marigolds. There are so many more that we used to grow but seldom see now unfortunately, and they are generally in gardens of the older generation. Luckily, my neighbours are of that generation.
