Longwood was established in 1851. It was first located on the old Sydney to Melbourne Highway and served as a staging post for the horse-drawn coaches. The town moved west by about 4 km when the railway was built and a station was established at Longwood. The Post Office opened on 1 July 1852 and the Office named Longwood Railway Station opened in 1881. Longwood was later renamed Longwood East (but the sign on the Freeway now says "Old Longwood") and Longwood Railway Station was renamed Longwood. All very confusing.
On 17 January 1965 the town and surrounding countryside was the scene of a devastating bushfire which claimed the lives of 7 people trying to flee in one car. You will find a memorial to this family in Pub Paddock and their graves are in the little Cemetery on the eastern side of the Freeway.
Apparently Longwood hosts the annual Victorian Carriage Driving Championships around Anzac Day. I must make a visit on one of these occasions to watch the riders and horses with their beautiful traditional carriages.
