Mary Lou Retton was born January 24, 1968, in Fairmount, West Virgina. This 4'9" woman represented the United States in the 1984 Summer Olympics in Las Angeles, CA. She won the gold medal for women's all around gymnast. The first female to do so outside of Eastern Europe. She scored a perfect 10 in the vault and won silver and bronze in other individual events.
The 1984 Summer Olympics or the XXIII Games of the Olympiad were boycotted by the countries of the Soviet block. There were fourteen countries that boycotted in cluding Cuba, East Germany. The boycott of the games was in retaliation of the United States leading a similar boycot of the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow. President Jimmy Carter had issued the boycott due to the Soviet invasion of Afganistan in 1979.
