Wing village, on the edge of Buckinghamshire and overlooking the Aylesbury Vale, is a small village with a big history!
Perched on a hilly outcrop overlooking the Aylesbury Vale, there has been a settlement at Wing since at least the Roman invasion of Britain. The Saxon All Saints Church, originally built in the 8th century, incorporated bricks and tiles salvaged from an older Roman structure that stood on the same site. The modern church is well worth a visit as it still has many of its original Saxon features.
The settlement has also drifted over the centuries. To the south and east of the village, if you follow the many footpaths that lead from the village you will find extensive earthworks showing the ancient extent of the old village.
In more recent times Wing was earmarked as the potential location for a new London airport, and a community protest group, Wings off Wing, was formed to lead the charge against the construction that would undoubtedly have destroyed much of the character of the local area. The protest was ultimately successful, when the decision was made to extend Heathrow, rather than to build a separate airport.
Wing today is a large village with a thriving community and is well worth a stop-off next time you're passing through!
