Cantor, compositor, actor e director de cinema, foi uma das personalidades mais marcantes do mundo artístico europeu neste século.
Além de seu talento sem igual, o segredo de Jacques Brel era o seu inabalável profissionalismo: ensaiava até à exaustão todas as músicas, todas as representações, todos os momentos de seus shows.
Dizia que o talento era só a "vontade" de fazer alguma coisa e não a habilidade em si.
Dessa forma, afirmava que só com trabalho incansável se poderia alcançar objectivos.
Depois de quinze anos e mais de vinte milhões de discos vendidos Brel decidiu abandonar a carreira de cantor, afirmando que era tempo de enfrentar novos desafios.
Cansado do mundo do show business europeu, cada vez mais dominado exclusivamente pela lógica do mercado, decidiu mudar radicalmente
a sua vida. Em meados da década de 70 Jacques Brel compra um barco e se aventura numa volta ao mundo solitária, apenas acompanhado pela sua namorada. No final da viagem, aportou na Polinésia e decidiu não mais voltar para a Europa.
Instalou-se numa casa simples nas ilhas Marquesas, próximo de onde viveu
também Paul Gauguin e nunca mais voltaria a morar na Europa.
Voltou apenas uma vez em 1977 para gravar seu último disco, de estrondoso sucesso.
Nessa época ele já sofria com os sintomas de um cancro no pulmão, que tratava há alguns meses mas que jamais conseguiria curar.
Em 1978 o mundo recebeu, inconsolável, a notícia da morte de Jacques Brel, aos 49 anos.
Seu amigo Georges Brassens, nesse dia, disse: "Jacques Brel não está morto. Para revivê-lo, basta que
que escutemos os seus discos".

Singer, songwriter, actor and film director, he was one of the most
outstanding personalities of the European art world in this century.
His songs have crossed time and borders, being translated and performed
worldwide by today.
On stage, Jacques Brel was a "musical actor", who lived each song with an
impressive force. Each interpretation was a little "play". Thus, Brel could
reconcile what seemed contradictory at the time: the quality of the music and
the sophistication of interpretation on stage.
In addition to his unique talent, the secret of Jacques Brel was his
unwavering professionalism: rehearsed to exhaustion all music, all
representations, every moment of his shows.
He said that the talent was only the "will" to do something, and not the
ability itself. Thus, stated that only tireless work allows to achieve goals.
After fifteen years and over twenty million records sold, Brel decided to
abandon singing career, saying it was time to face new challenges. It is
possible that the music had become a routine, which was unbearable for him.
Disappointed and tired of the world of European show business, increasingly
dominated by the logic of the market, he decides to radically change his life.
In the mid 70s, Jacques Brel buy a boat and decides to travel, only accompanied
by his girlfriend. At the end of the trip, he arrived in Polynesia and decided
not to return to Europe. He settled in a simple house in the Marquesas Islands,
near where lived also Paul Gauguin.
He returned only once in 1977, to record his last album, of resounding
success. At that time he was already suffering with the symptoms of cancer of
the lung, which was a few months ago, but that would never heal.
In 1978, the world received inconsolable news of the death of Jacques Brel.
He was 49 years old.
His friend Georges Brassens, said, "Jacques Brel is not dead. To have him
alive again, just listen to his records."
