Geocache Description:

A new addition to what I hope will be a power trail along State Road 3 stretching from the Kendallville area down to Muncie, with the potential to extend beyond both cities.  The trail will utilize old and decommissioned alignments of the highway as much as possible.  Most, but not all, of the hides will be in rural areas away from muggles and should be easy P&Gs.  None should require parking on busy stretches of highway unless parking is provided.

Indiana's State Road 3 figured prominently in my youth.  Growing up in one of the small towns outside of Muncie in Delaware County I was fully aware of the impact SR 3 had back when it still ran through the heart of the "Big City".  My family travelled on SR 3 north of Muncie to get to family and friends in the small town of Eaton and in Wells County, and took the highway south through New Castle on the way to ballgames in Cincinnati.  Years later I moved to Fort Wayne and continue to use the old highway to get back to family and friends in Delaware County.  When looking for a reason to hide my first cache I took inspiration from AriEthan's "Geocaching 101" series and T-Hunter's additions to the HWY 127 Power Trail in Ohio.

SR 3 is the third major highway running north-south in Indiana after SR 1 and US 27.  It once ran the length of the eastern third of the state from near the Michigan state line to the Ohio River just north of Louisville.  The highway was broken into two sections in 1972 when a long stretch of the old road in the Fort Wayne-area was decommissioned upon the completion of I-69.  SR 3 currently traverses 223 miles of Indiana roadways.

SR 3 once ran through the heart of Fort Wayne, following Lima Rd. from the north to Clinton St. where it connected with US27.  The old highway continued through downtown and split from 27 at Rudisill Blvd. where it turned to the west to Broadway.  It turned north then took an immediate westerly turn on Bluffton Rd.  The highway went west on Lower Huntington Rd. to Baer Rd. then south to Baer Field and Indianapolis Rd.

It was a bear trying to find a good hiding location along this route through the city that wasn't precluded by another cache.  I hope to locate some more later this season.

Please post any DNFs or if the container or its contents need maintenance.  Also, please let me know if the coordinates need to be tweaked.  The posted coords are an average of three readings.
