Όποιος ακούει "Θραψανό" του έρχεται στο μυαλό "αγγειοπλαστική" ή "πίθος". Ο πίθος, που τον κατασκεύαζαν ήδη οι Μινωίτες, είναι ένα τεράστιο (κάποιες φορές ψηλότερο από έναν άνθρωπο) δοχείο με χοντρά τοιχία με το σχήμα ενός αμφορέα. Κυρίως χρησιμοποιόταν για να αποθηκεύουν ελαιόλαδο, νερό, μέλι, αλάτι ή σιτηρά. Προφανώς έθαβαν οι Μινωίτες και ανθρώπους μέσα σε πίθους. Στο νεκροταφείο του χωριού της Κριτσάς βρέθηκε ένας παιδικός σκελετός μέσα σε έναν πίθο.
Οι κάτοικοι του Θραψανού θεωρούνται απόγονοι των Μινωίτων αγγειοπλαστών. Έτσι ο όρος "Θραψανιότης" χρησιμοποιείται που και που ως συνώνυμο με "αγγειοπλαστής".
Υπάρχουν κάποια ιδιωτικά κεραμοποιεία γύρω γύρω στο Θραψανό και αυτό το κεραμοποιείο, το "ΜΙΝΩΣ Συνεταιρισμός Αγγειοπλαστών Θραψανού".
Τρεις καλοί λόγοι για να περάσει ένας geocacher εδω:
1. Από την Δευτέρα μέχρι την Παρασκευή το πρωί ως την 2 μ.μ. μπορείτε να δείτε την παραγώγη στους αγγειοπλαστικούς τόρνους.
2. Δεν υπάρχουν μόνο πίθοι. Υπάρχουν και μικρότερες γλάστρες σε πολύ καλές τιμές!
3. Από τώρα και στο εξής υπάρχει και ένα GEOCACHE!
(Ο συνεταιρισμός είναι ανοικτός και τα απογεύματα και το Σάββατο το πρωί, αλλά μόνο για την πώληση. Το κουτάκι της κρύπτης θα το βρείτε πάντα ακόμα και αν είναι κλειστός ο συνεταιρισμός.)

The village Thrapsano is identified with pottery and particularly with the manufacture of “pitharia”. A "pithos" is a huge container (sometimes higher than as person) with a thick bulbous hull made from clay similar to an amphora. Mainly a pithos was used to store olive oil, water, honey, salt and cereal. Obviously it was used as well to bury people, as on the cemetery of the village Kritsa there has been found the skeleton of a child within such a pithos.
The residents of Thrapsano are considered descendants of the Minoan potters. Traditionally therefore the Thrapsano resident “Thrapsaniotis” is identified even today with the potter and in particular with the name of “pitharas”.
In the area of Thrapsano you will find private potteries as well as this one, the "MINOS Potters Cooperative of Thrapsano". There are at least three reasons to pass by:
1. You may watch the works in the pottery. The potter's wheels are in action from Monday to Friday from early until 2 p.m.
2. You may find for reasonable prices as well little pieces to buy as souvenir from Crete. They do not have only huge pithoi!
3. From now on you will find as well a geocache at it's entry!
(It is open as well the afternoon and Saturday morning for selling. And the cache-container can be found at any time, even when the cooperative is closed.)

Das Dorf Thrapsano wird mit Töpferhandwerk gleichgesetzt, insbesondere mit der Manufaktur von Pithoi (Einzahl: Pithos). Der Pithos, der schon von den Minoern hergestellt wurde, ist ein großes (gelegentlich sogar übermannshohes), dickwandiges, bauchiges Vorratsgefäß aus Ton ähnlich einer Amphore. Primär dienten Poithoi zur Aufbewahrung von Olivenöl, Wasser, Honig, Salz und Getreide. Offensichtlich wurden sie auch zur Bestattung verwendet, auf dem Friedhof des Dorfes Kritsa wurde in einem Pithos ein Kinderskelett gefunden.
Die Βewohner Thrapsano werden als Nachfahren Minoischer Töpfer betrachtet. So wird noch heute die Bezeichnung für einen Bewohner von Thrapsano, „Thrapsaniotis“, häufig als Synonym für „Töpfer“ verwendet.
Neben einer Reihe von privaten Töpfereien rund um Thrapsano, gibt es hier die „MINOS Töpfer-Kooperative von Thrapsano“. Es gibt drei gute Gründe, einmal hier vorbeizuschauen:
1. Von Montag bis Freitag kann man hier vormittags bis 14 Uhr den Töpfern bei ihrer Arbeit an den Töpferscheiben und am Brennofen zusehen.
2. Es gibt nicht nur mannshohe Gefäße. Wer eine kleinere Amphore günstig erwerben will, wird hier sicher fündig.
3. AB SOFORT gibt es hier auch einen Geocache!
(Die Kooperative hat auch nachmittags und am Samstagvormittag für den Verkauf geöffnet. Der Cache ist rund um die Uhr erreichbar, auch wenn die Kooperative geschlossen ist.)
