Geocache Description:

This is the fourth in a nineteen cache series dedicated to our great friend and near neighbour Bernard Glovell-Raff who has lived in the area for well over 60 years and walks part of this route nearly every day. He has seen the area change over the decades and always has a story to tell when we accompany him. The route is a rough figure of eight and should take 2 hours or so to complete.

Bernard says:

“You are standing very close to where the Berry Grove Lane crossed the newly built Watford By-Pass (now the A41) at the time I moved to the area in the mid-thirties. The area still felt quite rural at the time and the By-Pass was tree lined with woods on both sides. In the first few years of the war, a bomb dropped quite close to where you are now on the alignment of the original footpath from Bushey Mill Lane. Thankfully it was in the middle of a field and nobody was injured but it was only about a third of a mile from the house. We were all away at the time but the neighbours filled us in when we returned. The crater was immense.”

“The area changed beyond recognition in the sixties as this became firstly the southern terminus of the M1 and then a much expanded junction with the north side of Berry Grove Lane becoming a cul-de-sac.”

You are looking for a camouflaged plastic box.

To get to the next cache in the series:

Continue under the second bridge and then immediately right through some vertical metal poles and down the metaled path
