The old pines trail takes you to the heart of Glen Tanar's magnificent forest and you are never far from the sparkling Water of Tanar. The path consists of a mixture of grass surfaces and crushed stone. The route is waymarked - follow the Pine Cone symbol on the waymarkers.

The recommended starting point is from the Glen Tanar Visitor Centre. There is a 'pay and display' car park clearly signposted. These caches have been placed by agreement with Glen Tanar.
Renewable energy has been used in Glen Tanar for hundreds of years. Can you spot nearby evidence of how energy was generated perhaps several hundred years ago?
In 1937 a pipe organ was gifted to the Chapel of Saint Lesmo by Arthur Charles Welsley, 5th Duke of Wellington who married the Hon. Lilian Maud Glen Coats, daughter of George Coats, 1st Baron Glentanar in 1909. The organ was powered by hydro electricity from the turbine near the river which you can still see. This was long before there was a public electricity supply in Glen Tanar. If you look across the field you will see the mound which contains a water pipe from an inlet upstream to supply water to turn the turbine.
