Geocache Description:

Welcome to another cache by Team Ladava continuing our historical tour of Sunbury.

The Heritage Listed, Jacksons Creek Rail Bridge was built on the second stage of the Melbourne-Bendigo line for the Victorian Railways and was opened in July 1861.

It is the oldest known, existing, metal girder bridge in Australia, the earlier 1859 Barwon River Bridge at Geelong having been destroyed.

The bridge is a metal girder construction and, as originally built, had spans of 25.8m, 28.2m and 25.8m, totalling 79.7m. The Bridge carries two 1.6m rail tracks. The ballasted deck was supported by two, half through, tubular metal girders. The original piers and abutments were of stone, with unusual reticulated decoration at the ends of the spans. Intermediate brick piers and plate girders were added in 1917 to subdivide the cross girder spans. The timber deck was replaced with steel in 1974.

Best parking is in Wirilda Court then follow the fire trail through the reserve behind the houses.
