I happened upon the Glass Forest while trying to track down all of the "hidden gems of DC". One warm day last fall, I decided to head to the Palisades and try to track it down. After a few false turns and a few questions to completely clueless people in the area, I found the Glass Forest. Now for a little history. There are a few stories about how the Glass Forest started. The most prevalent is that a local artist started adding sculptures to the woods for the amusement of the local kids. A few years ago, a group of teens went in and destroyed a lot of the sculptures. The people in the neighborhood banded together and soon the forest was back, almost like new. From what I can tell, it's an on-going project. The photos that I took today are noticeably different from the ones that I took in the fall. So make sure you stop by again to check out any new changes!
Now that there is much less foliage on the trees, you can see a glint as you approach from the sun bouncing off the glass/metal. If you go on a windy day, as I did, you'll surely hear it before you see it. If you're feeling adventurous, the trail continues past the Glass Forest into National Park Service land. You can't miss the signs for the boundary. Be warned, the trails further back are pretty steep. Note: When I was there in the fall, I saw the biggest stag that I've ever seen in my entire life (and I'm from the country and have seen my fair share of deer) so keep your eyes peeled...you never know what you'll see!
