Geocache Description:

A walk in the foothills of the Bluestack Mountains to a place steeped in history

Dysert has been a sacred site for hundreds of years.  There are legends of ancient druid kings being buried here and of a medieval monasitc site that was visited by St Cholm.  What is known for sure is that the site was used even until as recently as the 1950s as a buring ground for unbaptized babies and for adults who died of 'fever,' possibly TB, who were buried in secret due to the shame of the manner of their death.

Saint Cholm has strong links to this area.  He visited the monastry and blessed the holy well there.  There is small alter built during penal times upon which is stone with a hole in it.  St Cholm was said to have looked through this hole and blessed everything he could see.  Between the holy well and alter is a stone wall with a stone structure which some say is a dolmen but I think is more likely to be the entrance way to the medieval monastic site.  Behind the stone alter is another stone pile, probably left by people on pilgrimage from the surrounding areas.

Due to the sacred nature of the site, the cache is well away from all structures.  The site is on a public path but there are sheep in the area so please keep all gates closed and dogs on leads.

The cache is a small black cannister with a GC label, containing a log book and swapable.  BYOP
