Johnson County Park & Recreation District (JCPRD) is celebrating its 60th anniversary in 2015. The District is a leader in its field providing the community with top quality parks and recreational opportunities while being responsible stewards of all our resources. The District’s contributions to the personal lives of Johnson County’s citizens have earned the District local appreciation and national acclaim. Each year the District records more than 7 million park visitors and over 2 million recreation participations in over 4,000 programs. Their slogan is “What do YOU do for fun? If you are reading this, one answer is probably Geocaching. The District is planning many special activities throughout the year. With that in mind, and with the District’s approval we bring you 60 JCPRD caches, one for each of their 60 years. This series highlights some of the District’s specialized departments and programs with 15 different caches listed below. Most of these areas are within the Safety and Outdoor Education and the Recreation Divisions and may not be as widely known as the Parks and Golf Course Division. Each specialty area has a cache with a code in it. Collect all 15 and you will have the coordinates to this series final. These caches are hidden in a variety of locations and not all will be on District land. Enjoy these gems of the county and happy caching, but most of all have FUN!

This cache is placed at the JCPRD Nursery, home to the District’s Horticulturist. This certified Arborist performs many duties in the District parks and facilities in addition to managing and maintaining this nursery. This position assist the parks in a variety of ways, including planting, trimming, and removing trees, identifying weeds and recommending the best way to manage them, suggesting plants and flowers for specific spaces, and planning flower beds, and landscaping including the Theatre in the Park grounds. A large current project is working with the District’s Field Biologist to deal with the Emerald Ash Borer infestation. So as you visit the parks, enjoy the landscaping and the beautiful trees.

This is an easy cache but one that is well hidden in a way befitting of a Certified Arborist. It is accessible at all hours but because there is no public parking at the nursery you should park at Mill Creek Activity Center and take the short walk over. This is in a business area so it can be busy during the day and the park staff comes and goes during their work hours but they know it is here and will be looking for your visit, so give them a wave while you are logging this one.
