Minnesota Spirit Quest - Preiss Cemetery

The cache is not located near a grave... If you find a fallen US flag, please stick it back in the ground. As always, please be respectful, and cache in, trash out. Also, please only search for cache during daylight hours.

This rural cemetery is maintained on a regular basis and is in good shape. The cemetery is located near the south side of highway 212 about one and one half miles west of the city of Chaska, Minnesota. There is no church at this location. The cemetery is still being used.

At the posted coordinates, you will find the large gravestones of Gustave Dennin and Wilhelm Bandimer.

In "History of the Minnesota Valley" [1882] by Rev. Edward D. Neill, he wrote: ‘... Lutheran - Services were conducted at the house of Michael Preiss, in section 14, as early as 1857, continuing for several years irregularly. ... The Lutheran Cemetery was established in the north-west quarter of section 14 in 1857. Katie Preiss, whose death has been mentioned, was the first buried here.’ (page 382). ‘Among the first deaths were those of Katie Preiss and Michael Eichelmiller; the former occurred 28 October 1857, and the latter soon after.’ (page 381).

In the "Compendium of History and Biography of Carver and Hennepin Counties, Minnesota" [1915] edited by Maj. R.I. Holcombe and William H. Bingham, t hey wrote:  "A Lutheran congregation was formed and services held at the house of Michael Preiss, in section 14, as early as in 1857 and continued for several years, although irregularly." (page 237).
