Alle spalle dell'abitato di Uliveto Terme si trova una delle più grandi cave di pietra calcarea del Monte Pisano. Riconoscibile da grande distanza, oggi è abbandonata. Dalla cava è possibile accedere alla Buca della Cava, una delle principali grotte del Monte Pisano, chiamata anche Wavavuma. L'accesso è riservato a speleologi esperti ed attrezzati.
La cava non è accessibile da Uliveto Terme. Una possibilità è partire da Caprona, seguire il sentiero CAI 139 fino a Casa Focetta e da lì imboccare un sentiero che porta al ciglio della cava. Seguendo il ciglio si arriva alla parte meridionale, da cui si accede ai vari livelli. La cache si trova al secondo livello dall'alto, e vi invito a esplorare la cava. Sono circa 7-8 km andata e ritorno.
ATTENZIONE PERICOLO:
La cava può essere molto pericolosa, dato che le pareti fra i vari livelli sono molto ripide e possono franare. Si trovano molti resti metallici di tubi e macchinari. Prestare particolare attenzione alla zona dell'entrata della grotta (al terzo livello), dato che è molto profonda. Non entrate assolutamente se non siete speleologi esperti.
La cache è situata dietro una roccia sulla parete del secondo livello, a circa 2 metri dal suolo. L'arrampicata è abbastanza semplice con terreno asciutto, però controllate che gli appigli tengano (la roccia è abbastanza friabile). È una scatola di plastica regular, che contiene logbook e qualche oggetto da interscambio.
Just behind the village of Uliveto Terme there is one of the largest limestone quarries of Monte Pisano. Recognizable from far away, it is currently abandoned. From the quarry it is possible to access the Buca della Cava, one of the most important caves of Monte Pisano, also called Wavavuma. Only properly equipped and experienced speleologists can enter.
The quarry is not directly accessible from Uliveto Terme. One possibility is parking in Caprona, follow the path CAI 139 until Casa Focetta and from there take a path that will bring you to the edge of the quarry. Following the edge you'll get to the South side, which gives access to all the floors. The cache is on the second platform from the top, and I invite you to explore the rest of the quarry. It's about 7-8 km return.
ATTENTION DANGER:
The quarry may be very dangerous, since the slopes between the platforms are very steep and may slide. There are remains of metal objects (tubes and machine parts). Be particularly careful if you get close to the entrance of the cave (on the third platform), since it's really deep. Do not enter until you're an experienced speleologist.
The cache is hidden behind a rock on the wall of the second platform, at about 2 meters from the ground. It's an easy climb with dry terrain, but make sure you grip stable rocks (rocks break very easily). It's a regular size plastic box, containing logbook and some interchange objects.
