Geocache Description:

We knew of only one cache in Thrintoft which disappeared before we could look for it, so it seemed a good idea to place our first cache near the village. It is really a cache and grab with a stopping place very near GZ but it is at a field gate so please be aware of the farmer’s access. The cache is not in a field and is accessible from the roadside verge. It should be straightforward and we hope it won’t drive you Round the Bend.

Thrintoft is a small village west of Northallerton, low-lying and muddy in bad weather. This village and much of nearby Morton-on-Swale, belonged to the Earl of Harewood and when the estate was broken up in 1922 some farmers took the opportunity to purchase their farms.

A pump at the crossroads, is now disused, and on the main street was a spring which was never known to dry up. Before mains water was available villagers queued up with pails, and farmers with milk churns. The North Bridge over Thrintoft Beck was built in the early 20th century.

Of historic interest is a 15th century Cistercian chapel, latterly used as a barn, at Thrintoft Grange at the west end of the village. This was one of three grange chapels attached to Jervaulx Abbey, which had extensive agricultural interests, and was for travellers between Jervaulx and Rievaulx.

You will need a pen or pencil to sign the log. Please replace the cache exactly as found
