Geocache Description:

FTF: Macadonis. Christmas Dinner Northwest Event in Co. Tyrone on Saturday, December 12.

A Barbecue style event on the Atlantic side of Coney Island. I hope to set up a marquee shelter over the BBQ to protect it and us from the inevitable breeze. Hopefully it will be a dry day. If not then there is a public house in the little 'village' we could perhaps retire to! The 'official' event will last about 2 hours but it is probable that some people will arrive/leave early due to the forces of nature. The good thing about the event location will be that we will be able to monitor the tide in order to make the return crossing.

The northwest doesn't seem to get many events and I thought I would hold one of these and see how many cachers might turn up from the area! Might suit the local cachers rather than having to go far to the east for the regular events. This will be the sixth event in the northwest that I will have organised.

Coney Island, in County Sligo, Ireland, is one of several islands of the same name off the coast of Ireland. It is an island of approximately 400 acres and is named after the vast quantity of rabbits which can be spotted on the island at any time (Coney is an English word for a rabbit or rabbit hair, deriving from the Latin cuniculus, meaning "rabbit"). In 1862 the island had a population of 124 people, with 45 children attending the local school. The island now has only one family of permanent inhabitants (traceable back to the 1750s) but has many other temporary residents, especially in the summer months. The island gained electricity in 1999 via an underground cable. Visitors to Coney Island like to frequent the local pub, spot the faerie ring and napoleopic star shaped forts, visit Carty’s strand (the secluded beach to the rear of the island) for a swim or walk around the island to spot rabbits or the schoolhouse and other famine structures which remain.

Usual draw for FTF will take place. The FTF winner gets a commemorative mug! And also gets to throw the dice deciding on the northwest county for the next event in mid December, later this year!

Please register your interest accordingly.
