Geocache Description:

Will soon begin archiving this series.

Johnson County Park & Recreation District (JCPRD) is celebrating its 60th anniversary in 2015. The District is a leader in its field providing the community with top quality parks and recreational opportunities while being responsible stewards of all our resources. The District’s contributions to the personal lives of Johnson County’s citizens have earned the District local appreciation and national acclaim. Each year the District records more than 7 million park visitors and over 2 million recreation participations in over 4,000 programs. Their slogan is “What do YOU do for fun? If you are reading this, one answer is probably Geocaching. The District is planning many special activities throughout the year. With that in mind, and with the District’s approval we bring you 60 JCPRD caches, one for each of their 60 years. This series highlights the District’s parklands with 15 different caches listed below. The outstanding parks and recreational resources managed by the District are among Johnson County’s most popular and valuable community assets. The tremendous popularity of their parks and the wide variety of recreational opportunities they provide is a reflection of the vital role the District plays in making Johnson County one of the most livable communities in America. Each park has a cache with a code in it. Collect all 15 and you will have the coordinates to this series final. Some of these caches are located at future parklands and some are located within existing parks. Enjoy these gems of the county and happy caching, but most of all have FUN!

This cache is for Shawnee Mission Park. The land for this 1,600 acre park was purchased through the District’s initial bond issue in 1056 and was dedicated on May 30th, 1964. It is JCPRD’s flagship park and the most visited park in the state of Kansas. You have or will be introduced to many of the parks attractions through other caches in this series but other features include disc golf, archery range and shelter houses. The center piece of the park is the 120 acre Shawnee Mission Park Lake which features many additional recreational opportunities like fishing. While the fishing is great here and the District raises much of there own fish stock this cache is no where near water. That, however, doesn’t mean that you won’t be fishing for this cache. There is no parking close to this cache, Theatre In The Park is the closest. PLEASE! Do not use or enter the park maintenance area. They have been kind in allowing the placement of the cache around their area but if there are problems I will have to remove it, and it is great cache that you won’t want to miss. So remember the maintenance area and the drive to it are off limits to the public. Thank you for your cooperation with this. So happy casting and reel is this cache!
