Most people drive past old lock 59 and the modern lock 28b on Clinton st.and are never aware that there's another lock further east. In fact there used to be three older locks here during the period of 1840-1914 in what was known as "Lockville".
During the building of the Barge Canal in 1914, the lower lock was dismantled and the limestone blocks used in part of the new canal. The middle lock (where this cache is located) was recently owned by a scrap metal company who built a work shop in the south chamber and filled the north with scrap.
Today through the efforts of volunteers the north section has been cleared and is incorporated into a new trail park. You can see where the waters of the old canal would have widened out into a basin at the west/upper end of the lock, which is now the back yards of the neighboring homes.
