You can’t deny it: The views from here are just superb! (weather permitting) Looking south you can see – as the title suggests – the Gareloch. Its deep waters have been used as early as the 15th century by James lV for a naval expedition in an effort to bring the unruly Western Isles under royal control. In more recent times, it was an ideal testing ground for submarines during the First World War. The loch was again vital during WWII as both British and American submarines were based here. Nowadays, the Gareloch is home to the controversial Faslane navy base of the UK’s independent nuclear deterrent.

In 1603, MacGregor clansmen slaughtered many Colquhouns at the Battle of Glen Fruin. A memorial stone marking the site can be seen by the old road.
