Enjoy a stunning drive to the Carsaig Pier car park with fantastic views. Stop off for a break and grab an easy geocache without having to head far off the beaten track. This is also the start of the long walk past Nun's Cave toward Carsaig Arches.
Parking here is very limited with only space for 4 or 5 cars, so if you're planning the day in this area try to get there nice and early. The geocache is park and grab if you want a quick stop off but take some time to enjoy the views out over the bay from the old pier, which is no longer in use. This area is great for wildlife, look out for common seals, harbour porpoise and dolphins along the coast line. Butterflies like the marsh fritiliary and small copper can be found along the track and watch out for adders and slow worms too! The pier and boathouses featured in stardom way back in 1945, in the film "I know where I'm going"! But these days the area is more well known for it's brilliant geology and fossils, being one of the only sites on Mull to show sedimentary rocks, sandstone and chalk dating back to more than 65 million years ago - the majority of Mull is hard basalt rock. Fossils can be found near the pier at low tide. If you do chose to walk further in this area after finding the cache heading south west toward Carsaig arches you'll find Nun's Cave after about 2km. This site is said to have been a refuge for Iona Abbey's nuns during the reformation when they were driven out by reformers.
