Geocache Description:

Church Micro 2502...Haswell

St Paul’s Church was built in 1867 as a Chapel of Rest within the Parish of Shotton with Haswell.
This Parish itself had only been established in 1863, prior to that both Haswell and Shotton Colliery had been in the Parish of St Mary the Virgin, Easington Village.
In 1870 the separate Parish of Haswell was established with St Paul’s as the Parish Church.
It remained as a separate Parish until 1983 when we joined with the Parish of Holy Trinity South Hetton to form the United Benefice of Haswell and South Hetton.
Change was forced upon them once more in 1999 when they joined with St Saviour’s Shotton Colliery and St Bartholomew’s Thornley to form a United Benefice of Haswell, Shotton Colliery and Thornley
In 2004 the church of St Bartholomew’s (the Parish Church of Thornley) was effectively condemned as it was estimated over £250,000 was needed to make the building safe. The peoples of Thornley accepted that their church must close. They and the people of Haswell voted to form a new Parish of Haswell/Thornley with St Paul’s as the Parish Church.
