Ploče su grad u Hrvatskoj koji administrativno pripada Dubrovačko-neretvanskoj županiji.
Grad Ploče se smjestio u dolini Neretve u prometnoj razmeđi zapadne i istočne Europe. U okolici grada mogu se vidjeti Baćinska jezera, ušće rijeke Neretve, mnogobrojna brda i Jadransko more.
Izvorni, najstariji stanovnici ovog grada svoj grad zovu Ploča (stariji kažu: "Bija san u Ploči!", a ne: "... u Pločama"), što je i izvorno ime ovoga grada. Ime Ploča dato je vjerojatno zato što su stanovnici okolnih mjesta i prvi doseljenici vadili i sušili svoje ribarske mreže na području današnjeg grada ili po otočiću u sredini zaljeva koji ima izgled ravne ploče. Ploče imaju vrlo "bogatu" povijest promjena svog imena, prvo je za vrijeme Kraljevine Jugoslavije promijenjeno ime u Aleksandrovo, po kralju Aleksandru I. Karađorđeviću, to ime se održalo do II. svjetskog rata, i talijanske okupacije, kada Aleksandrovo postaje Porto Tolero (tal. luka za prekrcaj, a što je banalna istina, jer im je služila za ukrcaj sirovina iz Bosne prema Italiji). Nakon kraja rata 1945. vraćeno je izvorno ime, Ploča. Grad je od 1950.-54. godine, te od 1980.-90. nosio ime Kardeljevo po jugoslavenskom komunističkom političaru, Slovencu Edvardu Kardelju. U međuvremenu od 1954.-80. prvi put se uvelo ime Ploče, dakle množina prvotnog naziva, koje se vraća u počecima osamostaljenja Republike Hrvatske, već 22. studenoga 1990. godine.

The city of Ploce is situated in the valley of the Neretva in a busy crossroads of Western and Eastern Europe. Near the town can be seen Baćinska lake, river Neretva, numerous mountains and the Adriatic Sea.
The original, the oldest inhabitants of this city their city called Ploca (adults say: "I was been in Ploca" Rather than "... in Ploce" - singular instead plural), which is the original name of this city. The board name given is probably because the inhabitants of the surrounding villages and the first settlers harvested and dried for their fishing nets in the area of today's town or across the island in the middle of the bay that looks like a flat plate. The city of Ploce have a very "rich" history of changes of their names, first for the Kingdom of Yugoslavia changed its name to Aleksandrovo, after King Alexander I, the name is held to World War II, the Italian occupation, when Aleksandrovo became Porto Tolerate (ital. port for transhipment, which is a banal truth, because it is used for loading raw materials from Bosnia to Italy). After the end of the war in 1945. restored the original name, Ploca. City from the 1950th to 54th year, and from 1980th to 90th bore the name Kardeljevo by Yugoslav communist politician, a Slovene Edvard Kardelj. Meanwhile from 1954th to 80th first inject name Ploce, hence the plural of original name, which returns to the beginning of Croatian independence, on 22 November 1990.
