坐落于北京市沙滩路口的“北大红楼”作为当年新文化运动的中心和“五四”运动的发祥地，承担这种历史使命，对这座近九十年的著名建筑可以说当之无愧。
1918年落成的“北大红楼”，当年是北大校部、图书馆和文学院所在地。蔡元培、李大钊、毛泽东等都在这里工作过，鲁迅先生等许多著名学者和新派人物在这里讲过课。这里还集中了新潮社、国民杂志社、新文学研究会、哲学研究会等许多革新团体，《新潮》、《国民》、《每周评论》等进步刊物就在设在地下室的红楼印刷厂印制出版。如此深厚的历史和人文渊源，使“北大红楼”历经时代变迁而始终令人瞩目，成为我国新文化运动的标志性建筑之一。
1919年5月4日，反帝大游行从红楼北面的大操场集合出发，由此北大红楼成为新文化运动的营垒。图书馆主任室是李大钊担任北大图书馆主任时工作的地方。李大钊使北大图书馆从旧式藏书楼转化为现代大学图书馆，他被誉为中国现代图书馆之父。1918年初，李大钊在此创建中国第一个马克思主义研究小组。1920年3月，李大钊和共产国际代表维经斯基在这里讨论建立中国共产党的问题。1920年10月，李大钊和张国焘、张申府等在这里成立北京共产党早期组织，取名“共产党小组”，他每月捐出个人薪俸80块银圆作为党小组开展各项活动的经费。
北大红楼在1961年3月4日被国务院列为成为第一批全国重点文物保护单位。
