Due to numerous dams built up higher in the river, the mouth of the Seekoei river remains closed most of the time.
Although there are no hippo's in this river, we would like to share some interesting facts about these peculiar animals.
The hippo is one of the largest land mammals in the world ( after the elephant and the white rhino). They prefer to breed in water - their birth weight is between 25 and 45 kg. The average mass of an adult female is 1 300 kg and that of a male 1 500 kg, however they can run up to 30 km.p.h!!
Although hippo's are adapted for life in water, they cannot swim or float!! They move around by simply walking around on the riverbeds. They can even sleep under water using a reflex that allows them to pop up, take a breathe and sink back down without waking up.
Stay away from their powerful jaws and sharp teeth. ( in real life )
