There are a number of wastewater treatment plants in Dunedin and this one serves the Green Island area. Grit and plastics etc within the wastewater are removed by grit traps and 1mm milli-screens. The wastewater then goes through several processes before it reaches the secondary treatment process of UV disinfection.
After several more processes, including aeration tanks, sludge tanks, thermophylic and mesophylic digesters, the wastewater eventually is diffused at the end of an 850m long ocean outfall. The DCC website offers more information for those who are interested.
