Ephemeral ponds are temporary as the words meaning is-- short lived. They usually hold water in the late winter, spring and early summer. They are usually smaller than this one and are 1-3 feet deep. (Qustion #1 What are the approx. length an width of this ephemeral pond and how deep is it at the time of your visit?) Since there isn't water in them the whole year, there bottoms are not mucky like conventional ponds. Geologically the bottoms are a firm hardpan of clay or bedrock near the surface which helps them hold the water. (Question #2 What is the hardpan at this location? Clay or bedrock? Hint- notice the road cuts in the area) Ephemeral ponds do not have conventional inlets and outlets. These ponds are not as common as they used to be because they often get leveled out for farming. They are usually formed in depressions in the woods, among hills, a flooded meadow or on flood plain of a river or stream. (Question #3 This ephemeral pond is formed in the woods but there is another nearby reason that it is seasonably supplied with water, what is it?) They do give the environment the advantages of a wetland by helping protect the watersheds, by holding the water they help reduce runoff which lessons erosion and flooding. They also help resupply groundwater tables and keep sediment levels down in streams.
