The Santa Fe Trail Association is hosting a special GEOCACHE EVENT for the Santa Fe National Historic Trail GeoTour. On April 15, 2014, the Santa Fe Trail Association launched the Santa Fe National Historic Trail GEOTOUR on www.geocaching.com with 73 caches placed in historic locations relating to the Santa Fe Trail. Covering over 900 miles in length, participants are able to visit historic sites, museums, physical remnants and a varied landscape that makes up the legacy of the Santa Fe Trail through the popular outdoor activity of geocaching
This special event, celebrating our 1-year anniversary of the launch of the GeoTour, will be in conjunction with "Exhibit Dedication and Trail Event" being held at the McPherson Museum, 1111 E. Kansas Ave., McPherson, KS 67460. The event will begin at 12:00 noon with a BBQ lunch available ($10/person; reservations required by contacting director@mcphersonmuseum.com or by calling 620-241-8464 by 5:00 p.m., April 7th.) There wil be music provided by Dan Bruce and Friends. At 1:00 P.M. Dedication program for new wayside exhibits on the Santa Fe Trail; local auto tours of the Santa Fe National Historic Trail and the 1st Anniversary of the Santa Fe National Historic Trail GEOTOUR! At 2:00 p.m. there will be a special speaker, Dr. Michael Olsen, Vice President, Santa Fe Trail Association, presenting, "Oh! For a Tree! -- Gold Rush Emigrants on the Santa Fe Trail. At approximately 1:30 there will be a special drawing for all geocachers who have signed in at the special GEOTOUR registration table that will be located next to a freight wagon in front of the museum (N 38° 22.188' W 97° 39.008'). Registration will begin at NOON. There will be a special prize for the first geocacher to sign in, as well as a drawing at 1:30 p.m. for various prizes for geocachers.
Information/swag bags will be handed out to all geocachers signing in and information about the GEOTOUR sites going east and west of McPherson will also be provided. We will also have SFTA members on hand to answer questions about the GEOTOUR and geocaching.
