Albany was the last port of call for many Australian and New Zealand Soldiers and the last aussie human contact for some was with a young girl resident on Breaksea Island, before they left for war on Nov 1st 1914. Her name was Faye Cathrine Howe and she was only 15 when she took on the role of relaying messages from soldiers aboard the ships in King George Sound to their loved ones at home via telegraph. Using semaphore and morse code she sent and received many messages and later stayed in contact with various soldiers throughout the war. Her story is beautifully written in local author Dianne Wolfer's book “Lighthouse Girl”, for anyone who would like to read up on this fascinating story.
