Geocache Description:

Relax. You don't have to do a 1000 days in a row of geocaching! This challenge has just one key task you need to do. Find and sign the log of one physical cache that has remained unfound for 1000 or more days. Once you have located a cache that has been lonely for 1000 days you can go to the challenge GZ and claim the prize.

Note the cache location was shifted on 17/3/24. Redo your projection if you solved before this date.

The 1000 day challenge is one of two new caches to reward those who seek out and find very lonely caches. Its sister cache will be the 500 Day Challenge. There are plenty of caches out there that have not been found for more than 1000 days. You can use this site to help find them - http://project-gc.com/Statistics/DaysSinceLastFound  There were 85 available in New Zealand in early April 2015.

The Challenge has just a few rules you need to follow. NOTE from 20 September 2019 I will no longer accept any archived caches as suitable for this challenge. Any cache used to claim this find must still be available for everyone to locate on the day you sign the 1000 day challenge logbook. You can sign the logbook at the challenge cache prior to finding the lonely cache but record it as a write note until all conditions are met.

1. Locate and sign the log of one cache that has not been found by other cachers for 1000 or more days. Eligible caches found anytime in the past or in the future count.

2. All physical cache types count. Excludes other types such as Virtual, Earth Caches, Benchmarks, Waypoints and Locationless caches.

3. No double dipping. The cache used for this challenge can not be used for the 500 Day Challenge (Wellington).

4. Only one person (cacher avatar) can use a cache that has been unlogged for 1000+ days to claim this challenge. Those people who do their caching in groups will need to decide who gets any 1000 day cache found previously or in the future. Throw a coin, or use rock, paper, scissors to decide. Or just get out the door first...

5. Find this challenge cache and sign the log. In your online log, record the GC code, cache name, date your lonely cache was previously found, date you found the lonely cache and the elapsed days.

To find the 1000 day challenge cache you will need to climb more than 300 m in altitude (1000 feet) up a very steep hill. Don't go out in wet weather as the path is tricky enough when its dry. In 2024 there is now a slightly easier route to the cache on a different track. Still same altitude gain but steps have been added. To locate the cache you will need to project its position from the virtual location. The cache is 587 m away (more than 1000 feet) and in a direction of 67.68 degrees True. It is very close to a track so no need to scrub bash there.

Team GSEL found their 1000 day cache on 16 January 2015. It was Paengaroa Scenic Reserve (GC3CV6V) which had gone 1002 days unfound. We were the 2TF as well. This cache was a real mission to locate and the CO decided after we found it to archive this cache and will put in a new one in a more accessible area in the reserve.

There will be two champions for this challenge. The "Old School Champion" will be the cacher who has found a cache with the longest elapsed time, prior to publishing the 1000 day challenge. The "New Age Champion" will be the cacher who finds an eligible cache with the longest elapsed time, after publication date. Its possible to be the champion in both categories.
