Corporal William C. Comegys
Veteran of the Civil War
William Comegys enlisted in Company B of the 3rd Alabama Infantry as a private, by the end of the war his rank was that of Corporal. A book listed of the history of the Comegys family in North America listed a William Crawford Comegys as being born Alabama in 1835 and dying of disease during the Civil War in Virginia. The book also records a William Crawford Comegys as being born in 1847 and residing there after the war with a census reference as him being a medical student. Neither record makes a reference to a date of death.
The 3rd Alabama Infantry was the first to plan the confederate Stars and Bars in the hills of Mar in the hills of Maryland. The unit saw action at Sharpsburg, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Wilderness and Spotsylvania, with many other engagements between. The unit laid down its arms at Appomattox.
