Braille Braille is a tactile writing system used by the blind and the visually impaired. It is named after its creator, Frenchman Louis Braille, who went blind following a childhood accident. Braille characters are small rectangular blocks called cells that contain tiny palpable bumps called raised dots. The number and arrangement of these dots distinguish one character from another. NOTE: In the braille system the letters a to j are equivalent to the numbers 1 to 9 and 0. Also the question mark is equal to the open quote and there is only one sign for the opening and closing brackets.
Braille is een speciaal voor blinden ontwikkeld lees- en schrijfalfabet. De Fransman Louis Braille, die zelf op driejarige leeftijd blind was geworden, ontwikkelde en perfectioneerde dit schrift Braille is een zogenaamd reliëfalfabet; de letters en andere aanduidingen worden door middel van puntjes in het papier gedrukt, zodat er een kleine verhoging voelbaar is, die met de vingertoppen 'gelezen' kunnen worden. De puntjes zijn gegroepeerd op rasters van 2 bij 3 puntjes, waarbij in totaal 63 tekens mogelijk zijn. LET OP: in het braille systeem komen de de getallen a t/m j overeen met de cijfers 1 t/m 9 en 0. Ook is het vraagteken gelijk aan het aanhalingsteken openen en is er 1 teken voor zowel haakje openen als sluiten.
