Geocache Description:

One-room schools were commonplace throughout rural portions of Pipestone County in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

School District 13 was organized January 17, 1880. A schoolhouse was built in Hatfield in 1882. At first the school was a one-room building, but it was added to and became a fine building for the time. It had two large classrooms, where the children were divided into lower and higher grades. J.R. Peck was the first teacher and while he had 25 students, the school consisted of 12 families. With the tightening of economy and the decreasing enrollment, district 13 was consolidated with Pipestone. An Auction was held June 1958 and the building was sold to the Village of Hatfield for $847.75 as an investment for the village. It would be rented out as a residence.

Information about country schools in Pipestone County can be found at the county’s museum. This is a small container just holding a log, so bring your own writing tool. A TOTT may also be needed.
