Geocache Description:

One-room schools were commonplace throughout rural portions of Pipestone County in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The district was approved on January 6, 1880. On the 1989 plat, district 12 is shown in Section 18 – part of the Percheron Horse Farm owned by Paine Lumber Co of Wisconsin. On 1914 plat the schoolhouse was located in 47 West on Section 12 on land owned by E.S. Butman. District 12 was dissolved by the county board on June 11, 1954 and attached to Pipestone. On November 12, 1955, an auction was held. The school building, 19 x32, was sold to Fred Wende for $366 and moved to his farm. The building was moved a second time to Oye’s property. Books, stove and playground apparatus were also sold at this auction.

Information about country schools in Pipestone County can be found at the county’s museum. This is a small container just holding a log, so bring your own writing tool. A TOTT may also be needed.
