Rubicon Dam was constructed as a part of the former State Electricity Commission Hydro Scheme. It is a functioning part of the Hydro Electric scheme as well as being a central historic element of the Rubicon Historic Walk (commencing at the 15000 Siphon Bridge 200 metres north of the Royston Power Station).
Access to the Rubicon Historic Walk and the Rubicon Dam is via the old tramway line that runs beside the raceline from the 15000 Siphon wooden trestle bridge to the Rubicon Dam. To commence the walk, travel to the 15000 Siphon Bridge and walk to the top of the bridge using the pathway. Then follow the historic railway line past the old State Electricity Commission Mill, over the Royston trestle bridge and past the Royston power station. Then walk along the raceline (upstream) for 50 minute walk to the Rubicon Dam.
The seasonal gate leading to the Royston power station and 15000 Siphon Bridge at the turnoff to the Royston road is closed in the wetter months. If closed, park in the carpark area on Royston road and walk past the gate and to the 15000 Siphon Bridge and the start of the Rubicon Historic Walk.
