Geocache Description:

SItuated on the northern side of the old hospital bridge the access from this side supports all of the anglers fishing from the sand banks. The community almost lost the last four sections on the Hospital side during decommissioning in April 2009 but Council agreed to leave it and develop it for fishing for which it gets used a lot.

Officially called "Pioneer Bridge" it was first built in 1877. In 84, 88 and 98 it was damaged and weakened with a new bridge built in 1903. In 1910 a cyclone destroyed seven spans and the bridge was rebuilt in 1937.

During demolition in 2009 when the foundations where removed from the middle of the river it was suprising how many where rotted out under the sand and pulled straight out. Makes you wonder how many floods the bridge had left in her before she would of given way.
