Le géocaching n'était pas techniquement possible avant la désactivation de la disponibilité sélective (selective availability) du GPS le 1er mai 2000. La première cache localisée par GPS et documentée fut placée le 3 mai 2000 par Dave Ulmer, originaire de Beavercreek (Oregon, USA). Les coordonnées furent publiées sur le groupe Usenet sci.geo.satellite-nav. Dès le 6 mai 2000, la cache avait déjà été trouvée deux fois et journalisée une fois par Mike Teage, originaire de Vancouver (Washington, USA).
Ce type de chasse au trésor était à l'origine appelé par ses premiers participants GPS stash hunt, ou gpsstashing. Après une discussion dans le groupe gpsstash de eGroups (par la suite devenu Yahoo! Groups), Matt Stum suggéra geocaching à la place de stash qui pouvait avoir des connotations négatives.
En 2000, Jeremy Irish, Elias Alvord et Bryan Roth fondent à Seattle la société Groundspeak, qui gère notamment le site Geocaching.com.

Geocaching was conceived shortly after the removal of Selective Availability from the Global Positioning System on May 2, 2000, because the improved accuracy of the system allowed for a small container to be specifically placed and located. The first documented placement of a GPS-located cache took place on May 3, 2000, by Dave Ulmer of Beavercreek (Oregon, USA) The location was posted on the Usenet newsgroup sci.geo.satellite. By May 6, 2000, it had been found twice and logged once by Mike Teague of Vancouver (Washington, USA)
The activity was originally referred to as GPS stash hunt or gpsstashing. This was changed shortly after the original hide when it was suggested in the gpsstash eGroupthat "stash" could have negative connotations and the term geocaching was adopted.
In 2000, Jeremy Irish, Elias Alvord and Bryan Roth founded in Seattle (Washington) the society Groundspeak which administers Geocaching.com site.

We will meet at the posted coordinates at 10:00 and at 10:30 we will take the group photo. Between the beginning of the event and the picture taking, we will discuss, exchange trackables and so on.
