The miniature railway was conceived in 1994 and became a reality in 1998, opening to the pulic for the first time on August 1st that year. The majority of the miniature locomotives on display are actually small live steam engines. They burn coal to create steam, so hot water, cinders and lubricating oil are present in abundance. Safety rules (which are prominently displayed) must be read, explained to children, and strictly observed if you go in to see the displays.
The little old station building on the site was originally the signal cabin at Yarongmulu on the Little Liverpool Range between Laidley and Grandchester, erected in 1891. It was moved to the present site in 1997 and took over 12 months to restore to its former glory.
