Rhode Island
Star - Final

To honor Rhode Island’s 225th anniversary of statehood, the Rhode Island Star is presented as a part of "Stars Across America," which is an effort to have a geoart star placed in each of the fifty states. This series contains 51 total geocaches in two separate areas of Arcadia Wildlife Management Area in southwestern Rhode Island.
This is the bonus geocache for the Rhode Island Star. The coordinates can be found among ten (10) random caches in the series, so at least a majority of the Rhode Island Star should be completed first. It is recommended that you complete the entire series in numerical order to minimize extra travel. Here are some things you should know before completing the Rhode Island Star:

  • The Rhode Island Star consists of two loops for a total of approximately 11 miles and may take at least 8 hours to complete.
  • Be sure to bring water, snacks (or lunch), bug spray, extra batteries, sturdy footwear, a pen and notepad, and anything else appropriate for a lengthy hike. Also, be sure to plan ahead and pay attention to the time as these trails can be dangerous after sunset.
  • The caches are along established trails in Arcadia Management Area, although some portions of these trails may be slightly overgrown. A trail map is provided below for basic navigation through the area.
  • With the exception of this final, all geocache containers are small, camouflaged lock and lock containers hidden in generally obvious locations (hints are provided along with the coordinates). No geocache is hidden in stone walls. Do not disassemble any walls!
  • As hunting is allowed in Arcadia Management Area, please ensure you wear at least 200 sq. in. of blaze orange as required during hunting season. More information can be found at http://www.dem.ri.gov or http://www.eregulations.com.
The geocache is not at the listed coordinates. It is recommended that cachers complete the series in numerical order, using the provided trail maps for guidance.

To obtain the actual coordinates, find the associated numbers in ten (10) random caches in the series. They are located inside the lid and on the back of the logbook. Record these numbers to complete the series. Each number given is associated with a letter A through J. Substitute for coordinates in the following manner to obtain the coordinates for the bonus cache:

N41 AB.CDE W071 FG.HIJ

Arrangements can be made to obtain missing numbers for the final coordinates, provided that a minimum of 40 caches in the series have been found and DNF logs have been posted for any associated caches. This will allow cachers to still find the final in the unlikely event a container with partial coordinates goes missing or if the information becomes illegible. Please contact us at ristargeocaches@gmail.com if there are any issues.
For those that complete the series, souvenir coins are available by contacting us at ristargeocaches@gmail.com. The final bonus cache and a minimum of 40 series caches must be found to receive this souvenir.
